The aim of the study was to determine the effects of alpha lipoic acid (ALA) on the lipid peroxidation and antioxidant status. Twelve rats were included in the control group. 48 rats were given a single dose of 50 mg/kg i.p. streptozocin. Blood glucose levels were measured after one week and the rats whose blood glucose levels were over 300 mg/dl were included in the study. After 3 weeks diabetic rats were divided into four groups; diabetic control group, ALA group, diabetic exercise group, ALA exercise group. ALA groups received 100 mg/kg i.p. ALA for two weeks. The rats in the exercise group were exposed to exercise at 15th day. Intracardiac blood was taken under anesthesia and malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitric oxide (NO) levels and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and xanthine oxidase (XO) activities were determined in the blood samples. It was observed that ALA exercise group had lower level of MDA than diabetic exercise group. NO levels in the exercise groups supplemented with ALA were lower than in the diabetic groups performed exercise but not received this supplementation. We concluded that exercise induced lipid peroxidation is decreased by ALA supplementation and NO increase is attenuated by ALA supplementation in diabetic rats.
