Is mannitol effective in preventing skeletal muscle ischemia reperfusion injury?

Purpose: The aim of this study was to detect the effectiveness of mannitol’s antioxidant capacity in the treatment of ischemia-reperfusion injury after acute Peripherie arterial occlusion. Material and Methods: 20 healthy individuals and 32 patients with acute arterial occlusion were taken to study. Of the acute isehemia diagnosed patients, Standard surgery was performed on 17 patients and surgery and mannitol infusion were given to 15 patients. Blood samples were taken from the deep veins and MDA, CPK, GSH-PX levels were measured in the acute isehemia diagnosed period and 120th minutes of the reperfusion. Results: MDA of mannitol treatment group in the isehemie period meaningfully inereased in consideration with the control group. İn consideration of reperfusion period with isehemie group in mannitol treatment MDA signjficantly decreased. İn the reperfusion period of mannitol treatment GSH-PX significantly inereased according to control group. Although the CPK results showed significant inerease in each period of both treatments, the reperfusion period of mannitol treatment showed a significant decrease in CPK considering with it’s isehemie period. Conclusion: İn acute arterial occlusions it was shown that mannitol decreases the activity of free oxygen radicals, inereases the antioxidant capacity, and decreases the tissue injury meaningfully.
