İn this study the in vitro activities of twelve antimicrobial agents against 50 Salmonella and 25 Shigella strains isolated in the years 1999 and 2000 at the Microbiology Laboratory of the University of Selçuk Faculty of Medicine were investigated by E test method. Of the 50 Salmonella strains 30 were identified as S. thyphimurium and 20 as S.enteritidis. İn this study for Salmonella isolates resistance to ampicillin was most common (90%), follovved by tetracycline (64%), chloramphenicol (48%), trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (16%), cefuroxime (16%), cefodizime, ceftriaxone, ceftazidime and cefepime (6%). Ali isolates were susceptible to meropenem, imipenem and ciprofloxacin. For 25 shigella isolates of our study the resistance were 88% for ampicillin, 76% for tetracycline, 64% for trimethoprim/sulphamethoxazole, 28% for chloramphenicol, 12% for cefuroxime and 4% for ciprofloxacin. Ali Shigella isolates were sensitive against meropenem, imipenem, cefodizime, ceftriaxone, ceftazidime and cefepime.
