Proliferating celi nuclear antigen (PCNA) in thyroid tumors

We have studied on 47 thyroidectomy material that vvere came to Fırat University Medical Faculty Department of Pathology for the determination of proliferative activity. PCNA method vvere applied, normal thyroid(9), adenomatous goiterfl 1), follicular adenoma(7), papillary carcinoma(l6), follicular carcinoma(2) and anaplastic carcinoma(2). Ali cases paraffin sections stained PCNA/cydin monoclonal antibody. Positive painted nuclei vvas evaluated and PCNA indices vvere calculated as percentage. PCNA indices vvere evaluated normal thyroid %0.5, adenomatous goiter %2.1, follicular adenoma %2.6, papillary carcinoma %6.2, follicular carcinoma %15.7 and anaplastic carcinoma %32.2. As a conclution, thyroid carcinomas shovved significantly increased numbers of PCNA positive cells when compared vvith benign thyroid tumors.
