This study was performed retrospectively by eva-luating the 51 patient's data who had chronic pa-ranchimal liver disease and who had ultrasonographic portal vein diameter from 1989 to 1994 in Internal Me-dicine Department of Selruk University School of Me-dicine. The cases were divided into three categories: the first who has easophagial varicess and varicess bleeding, the second who has easophagial varicess and not varicess bleeding. 17 cases was evaluated in each groubs. The finding of endoscopic and ult-rasonographic examinations was also consistent with other studies which performed in Turkey that implies the wider Vena porta diameter, the more common ea-sophagial varicess and varicess bleeding. Lack of such a strong correlation about this topic in France and Austria might be due to more earlier seeking medical advise of the patients in these countries.
